Akon is the latest US superstar to sign up for the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) with Zain. The Senegalese-American multi-platinum artist and producer is set to headline & Benny-D. has been dubbed the Official DJ to Host the Entire Event. at the 2009 MAMA Awards in Nairobi, Kenya on 10 October, performing alongside Fugees’ alumnus Wyclef Jean and a host of Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists including Wahu, M.I., Samini and Lira.

RockCorps harnesses the power of music to inspire volunteering by producing concerts for which the only way in is to give 4 hours at a volunteer project.

Our Rep Oly (Aurelie SUAU) went to Atlanta from the 22nd to the 29th of August to bring you a special editorial… Benny-D. in the house!!!

Benny-D. grew up in St Thomas on the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. 2001, Benny-D. is then 24 years old. Accompanied by his close friend Rock City (Song’s writer), they arrive in Atlanta. They play in many clubs, Benny-D.’s music starts to be known in Atlanta. At this time Akon is a regular guy who looks for a DJ to put in music the texts that he wrote previously. It’s Akon who will go to see Benny-D. playing in the “SPF 15”. Benny-D. feels then honoured that someone heard his music. Hazard or not, they are born the same day, the 16th of April. In between the two artists a respectful professional relationship will come up. Benny-D. is in Konvict world from the beginning, which is an important info, he is the Official DJ and the Music Director of Akon.

They work straight away on the first album, Trouble. 2003 is the time where they try hard to make it happen. They launch “Belly dancer”. The success is coming slowly. February 2004, they launch Locked up, everything start to move quickly. Then, come “Guetto”, “Lonely”, it’s a different day! Despite this success, Benny-D. is amazing by his simplicity, his humility. “I don’t see myself as a super star at all, so I stay accessible”. Don’t be surprised if you walk in Atlanta and see this super star driving his car, drinking a coke from Mc Do. However, in other countries it’s another game. What about Virgin Islands? “I’m from the street, and everybody know”.

Benny-D. has the same rhythm than Akon, so same question… How does he hold this performance? “When I’m on the stage, I’m like at home. I don’t see the crowd, I see myself from the audience, it makes me going harder”… Professional, 200% professional! About his personal life, Benny-D. will stay discreet, and anyway, we’re not here for gossips, but for the respect that we own to a serious hard worker! The story of this track is that it should have been launched in the Caribbean islands, the fact is that US and Africa like it a lot, Europe is on the point to discover it. So hopefully, we’ll see Benny’s cover in stores and concerts all over the world shortly. What does think Akon about that? They have now a strong friendship, and they will take the good decision when the moment will come.

Benny-D. is passionated by the cinema. He takes acting classes. He came out his class just before the interview. This is his first plan for the short term. He also works for the education. He uses his name to speak to the kids in difficulty. For the middle term, Benny-D. wishes to be known as the greatest entertainers. Finally, on a longer term, Benny-D. would like to be closer to his family, and invest himself in the Virgin Islands. “Because I’m on the road most of the time, my family is missing me”… Man; UK, France, All the European countries are with you!

Nicknamed the “pretty boy dreadhead”, multi-talented singer, songwriter, and producer Redd Hott blends reggae/dancehall lyricism with hip-hop commercialization into a unique and club-friendly musical style all his own.

Born and raised in Brooklyn East New York, Redd grew up singing about the same gun violence as his reggae peers. At the age of 15, however, the tragic shooting of his beloved uncle made him rethink the messages conveyed in his music. With a newfound sense of moral responsibility and a promise made to his mother, Redd brought a new message of love and positivity to his music, coupled by a conscious venture away from the traditional riddims of reggae.

Continuing to develop his craft, he went on to collaborate with close friend Collie Buddz on the 2007 album Come Around. While on radio promo with Collie, he hooked up with JAM’N 94.5 Boston musical director DJ Pup Dawg, who agreed to manage and co-executive produce the upcoming Redd Hott debut album Dream Girl. Collaborating with relative newcomer producer Rami Afuni (N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder), he is hard at work in the studio wrapping up recording for the album.

Dream Girl includes a diverse mix of reggae, pop, and hip-hop, with a feature by Bobby Valentino. Already, “Dream Girl”, the record of the same name, has begun to pick up significant local Boston radio station airplay and fan following. Along with the growing feedback through his MySpace page (myspace.com/reddhottreggae), the Brooklyn native has all the makings of a crossover, smash-hit success.

This will be one of Ontario’s largest music festivals of 2009, The 1000 Islands Music Festival will take place August 13, 14, 15, 2009 at The Dingman Farm located at 15 Pykeview Drive, Gananoque, in Leeds and 1000 Islands Township.

It’s expected that The 1000 Islands Music Festival will draw crowds from all over Ontario, Quebec and upper New York State and bring an expected 15,000 new visitors to the region. The festival organizers have assembled a roster of artists that have established world-wide success, and also a great list of Canadian independent and major label recording artists. The location will house two stages; accommodate over 30,000 people, camping for as many as 4,000, with food vendors, 2 beer gardens, and a VIP LLBO tent near the main stage.

The festival kicks off on the evening of Thursday Aug 13th with a celebration of the community. The event will wrap up with a large fireworks display Saturday August 15th.

Bollywood-style grand finale is the talk of every town

Today’s final of the Indian Premier League will be graced by India’s über-rich and famous, as well as international music stars.

Apart from the cricket action at Johannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium, the event — expected to attract more than 30000 spectators — has been billed as an “ extravaganza” of entertainment.

Reggae music legend Eddy Grant and American R&B singer Akon will perform at the post-match celebration, which will be televised to millions of viewers around the world.

Rajasthan Royals co-owner Shilpa Shetty, whose team clinched the IPL title last year but failed this time, will perform dance sequences to Akon’s hits.

Adding more Bollywood glamour will be actress Katrina Kaif, who, together with a troupe of Indian and South African dancers, will perform to AR Rahman’s Oscar award-winning song Jai Ho.

Chennai Super Kings drummer Sivamani will be accompanied on stage by Indian and South African drummers.

Fans will also be introduced to the newly crowned Miss Bollywood IPL South Africa.

IPL executive member Francois Pienaar said South African President Jacob Zuma and IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi would deliver addresses, followed by a “special evening”.

“There will be acrobats on a heliosphere (mobile bubble) above the stadium, fire dancers from Italy and 3000 pyros going off around the stadium,” he said.

The final will end with 5000 rounds of fireworks. The Johannesburg skyline will also be ablaze with 1500 flying lanterns.

Celebrities who will be attending the match include Preity Zinta and top Indian fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani, who has designed gowns and leisurewear for the Miss Bollywood IPL South Africa finalists.

Tahiliani said his collection for the pageant included fun T-shirts in the colours of the various teams and decorated with Swarovski crystals.

Indian tycoon Mukesh Ambani and his glamourous wife, Neeta, who own the Mumbai Indians, will also grace the final. Ambani owns India’s biggest private company, Reliance Industries Ltd, and is the country’s first rupee trillionaire.

Ranked by Forbes as the seventh-richest man in the world, Vijay Mallya, chairman of the United Breweries Group and Kingfisher Airlines and owner of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, arrived in the country on Friday.

The final has also brought to South Africa ardent Indian cricket fans, with South African Airways having had to increase its flights between Johannesburg and Mumbai.
